The Great Diaper Pail Smackdown

Now is the time to start thinking about the registry and other fun, mind boggling things.

For the most part, I have been able to choose simple items based on simple research – but here’s one I never even considered would be so much hassle – the diaper pail!

Pops and I have decided cloth diapering is the way we’d like to go – and it turns out most of the popular diaper pails on the market are for disposable only.  Sure, we could just get a typical waste basket and call it a day….but what fun would that be without a little research first?

So, here are a few things I know we would like:

  • Decent size
  • Odor control
  • Ability to use bags of own choosing
  • Ability to line pail with cloth bag

A quick search tells me I should be looking at the Diaper Champ, Diaper Dekor, Safety 1st Easy Saver, a regular garbage pail, or a large dog food twist top storage container.  Nice mix of products, right?

Diaper Champ seemed promising – and supposedly met all the above listed criteria….but based on further reviews, that was the old, original model…and the new one is not as great.  It jams easily, and is not recommended for cloth diapers anymore….There is one place online still selling the old version….but the website seems a little sketchy.  That said, I’m still tempted.

The next contender is Diaper Dekor.  While some reviewers have indicated they can use this with cloth diapers I’m not sure how – it takes special bags….which I suspect would prevent us from using our own cloth ones.  Hmm….Not sure about this one.

The Safety 1st Easy Saver is also touted as ‘cloth compatible’ – but I’ve read about issues with the sealer on it – and that more or less defeats the purpose of a fancy diaper pail over a regular garbage can, now doesn’t it?

Speaking of regular garbage pails….I have my reservations – only because I’d really like to see a rubber seal around the opening to really seal in odors.  I have yet to come across one and until I do, I think we’ll need to skip this option.

Lastly – a large dog food storage bin with twist top.  This has potential – but from what I’ve seen, the capacity appears to be a bit lacking – and we wouldn’t be able  to line the pail.  I’m not too keen on using the ‘wet diaper pail’ method for several reasons, so I’m not certain this is the way to go.

So!  In the end who wins?  No one for now…although I may try to get my hands on the Diaper Champ 4000 – the original.  Someone must have them….

Thought I’d quickly update on our decision – we purchased a small 10ltr Simple Human step can from Bed Bath & Beyond for less than $30 (coupons!) and will try it first…it should work fine…I hope!
